How to use Overtime Pay Calculator

This overtime pay calculator works out your total gross pay when some hours are paid at a higher rate. Enter your base hourly rate, regular hours and overtime hours, then choose a multiplier such as time-and-a-half (1.5×) or double time (2.0×). It instantly shows your regular pay, overtime pay, optional double-time pay and combined gross, plus a comparison of common multipliers so you can check exactly what each premium is worth.

  1. Enter your standard hourly pay rate.
  2. Add the number of regular hours worked in the period.
  3. Add your overtime hours and set the overtime multiplier (usually 1.5).
  4. Optionally add double-time hours with their own multiplier.
  5. Review regular pay, overtime pay and total gross for the period.

How overtime pay is calculated

Overtime pay equals your hourly rate multiplied by the overtime premium multiplier, then by the number of overtime hours. Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must earn at least time-and-a-half (1.5×) for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Some contracts or state laws add double time (2.0×) for holidays or very long shifts. This calculator keeps regular and premium hours separate so the total reflects each rate accurately.

Common overtime multipliers
MultiplierNameTypical use
1.5×Time and a halfHours over 40 in a week
1.75×Custom premiumSome union contracts
2.0×Double timeHolidays, 7th consecutive day

Federal vs state overtime rules

Federal law sets a weekly overtime threshold of 40 hours, but several states add daily overtime — for example, California requires time-and-a-half after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12. Exempt salaried employees may not qualify for overtime at all. Because the rules vary, always confirm your local law and your employment classification before relying on an estimate, and use this tool to model whichever multiplier applies to you.

Worked examples

Time and a half

Inputs: $20/hr · 40 reg · 5 OT @ 1.5×

Result: $800 + $150 = $950 gross

With double time

Inputs: add 2 hrs @ 2.0×

Result: +$80 → $1,030 gross
