How to use Currency Exchange Fee Calculator

The currency exchange fee calculator reveals the hidden markup baked into a currency conversion. Exchange services rarely charge an obvious fee — instead they quote you a slightly worse rate than the real mid-market rate and keep the difference. Enter the amount, the fair mid-market rate, the rate you were quoted, and any flat fee, and this tool shows exactly how much the exchange really costs and what percentage of your money disappears into the spread.

  1. Enter the amount you want to exchange.
  2. Enter the mid-market rate and the rate you were quoted, in the same direction.
  3. Add any flat fee the provider charges.
  4. Read the hidden cost, both as an amount and a percentage of fair value.

Your data never leaves your device — 100% private processing.

How exchange services really make money

When you change money, the provider almost never gives you the true mid-market rate. Instead they add a margin — the spread — by quoting a rate a fraction of a percent to several percent worse, and they keep the difference. On top of that some add a flat fee or a percentage commission. Because the spread is buried in the rate rather than shown as a line item, it is easy to miss: a "0% commission" offer can cost more than a service that charges a small explicit fee but uses a near mid-market rate. Converting the spread into a clear amount and percentage is the only way to compare offers fairly.

Example: exchanging 1,000 units at a 0.92 mid-market rate

How to get a fairer rate

To minimise what you lose to the spread, always compare the quoted rate against the current mid-market rate, which you can find with a quick search or on any financial site. Specialist transfer services and some multi-currency cards use rates very close to mid-market with a small transparent fee, which often beats banks and airport bureaux by a wide margin. When spending abroad, choosing to be charged in the local currency rather than your home currency avoids a second, usually poor, conversion added by the merchant. Running the numbers here before you commit turns an invisible cost into an informed choice.

Worked examples

Small spread

Inputs: 1,000 · mid 0.92 · quote 0.90

Result: Hidden cost 20 (2.2%)

With flat fee

Inputs: 1,000 · mid 1.0 · quote 1.0 · fee 10

Result: Hidden cost 10 (1%)

Fair rate

Inputs: 500 · mid 1.1 · quote 1.1

Result: No hidden cost
