How to use Slovakia Income Tax Calculator

This Slovakia income tax calculator estimates the tax on your gross salary based on your annual income and the tax year you select. Choose between 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. For 2023–2025 Slovakia applies two rates to your tax base — 19% up to 176.8× the subsistence minimum and 25% above — while the 2026 reform adds new 30% and 35% bands. The calculator deducts the basic non-taxable allowance (nezdaniteľná časť základu dane), then shows your effective rate, marginal rate and a full bracket breakdown, plus your estimated take-home after the employee social and health insurance.

  1. Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your annual gross income in euros (salary before tax).
  3. Keep the filing status as Individual — Slovakia has no joint spousal filing.
  4. Click Calculate to see your income tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
  5. Review the bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home after contributions.

How Slovak income tax works

Slovakia charges personal income tax (daň z príjmov fyzických osôb) on your tax base (základ dane). For 2023 to 2025 two rates apply: 19% up to 176.8× the subsistence minimum (životné minimum) and 25% on the part above. Before tax you subtract the basic non-taxable allowance (nezdaniteľná časť základu dane) of 21× the subsistence minimum, plus your mandatory social and health contributions, which are deductible from the base. Because both the threshold and the allowance are multiples of the subsistence minimum, they rise every year the subsistence minimum is increased. This calculator applies the full allowance to the income you enter, so treat the result as a conservative estimate for incomes below the allowance taper.

The 2026 four-rate reform

From 1 January 2026 Slovakia replaces its two-rate scale with four rates, all derived from the EUR 284.13 subsistence minimum in force from 1 July 2025. The 25% threshold drops from 176.8× to 154.8× the subsistence minimum (EUR 43,983.32), a brand-new 30% rate begins at 212.4× (EUR 60,349.21), and a new 35% top rate begins at 264.0× (EUR 75,010.32). The reform also raises the employee health-insurance rate from 4% to 5% and lifts the social-insurance assessment-base ceiling to EUR 16,764 a month. Middle and lower earners stay in the 19% band, but higher salaries now face materially more tax than under the old 19%/25% scale.

The non-taxable allowance and its taper

Every Slovak taxpayer can deduct a basic non-taxable allowance (nezdaniteľná časť základu dane na daňovníka) equal to 21× the subsistence minimum — EUR 5,753.79 in 2025 and EUR 5,966.73 in 2026. It is not a flat deduction for everyone, though: once your annual tax base passes 92.8× the subsistence minimum (about EUR 25,426 in 2025) the allowance shrinks linearly, reaching zero at the top of the 19% band. This calculator applies the full allowance to keep the estimate simple, so for incomes inside the taper it slightly understates your tax. Slovakia also offers a spouse allowance and a child tax bonus (daňový bonus na dieťa) that depend on your family situation and are not modelled here.

Social and health insurance

On top of income tax, a Slovak employee pays mandatory contributions deducted from gross pay: social insurance (sociálne poistenie) of 9.4% — made up of sickness 1.4%, old-age pension 4%, disability 3% and unemployment 1% — and health insurance (zdravotné poistenie) of 4%, rising to 5% from 2026. Social insurance is capped at the maximum monthly assessment base (EUR 15,730 in 2025, EUR 16,764 in 2026), so it stops rising on very high salaries; health insurance has no ceiling. The employer pays far more on top — 24.4% social and 11% health plus accident insurance — but that is not deducted from your pay. This calculator subtracts the employee 9.4% and 4% (or 5%) in your take-home figure.

Effective versus marginal tax rate

Your effective tax rate is your total income tax divided by total income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next euro, set by the highest band you reach. Most Slovak employees sit entirely in the 19% band, so their marginal rate is 19% but their effective rate is lower because the non-taxable allowance wipes out tax on the first part of their income. Only income whose tax base passes 176.8× the subsistence minimum (about EUR 48,441 in 2025) reaches the 25% marginal rate, and from 2026 the new 30% and 35% bands raise the marginal rate further for high earners.
