How to use France Income Tax Calculator
This France income tax calculator estimates your impôt sur le revenu using the official barème progressif for the year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 income). Choose single (1 part) or married/PACS (2 parts) to apply the quotient familial, then see your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home. France taxes income nationally — there is no regional income tax — and the first slice of income is tax-free.
- Select your income year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
- Enter your annual net taxable income (revenu net imposable).
- Choose your household: Single (1 part) or Married/PACS (2 parts).

How French income tax is calculated
France taxes income with a progressive scale (barème) applied per part. After dividing income by the number of parts, the first slice is tax-free, then each band is taxed only on the income within it. For a single person on €40,000 of 2024 income you pay nothing on the first €11,294, 11% on the next €17,503 (€1,925.33), and 30% on the remaining €11,203 (€3,360.90), totalling €5,286.23 — an effective rate of about 13.2%, well below the 30% marginal rate.
| Taxable Income (per part) | Rate | Band |
|---|---|---|
| €0 – €11,294 | 0% | Tax-free slice |
| €11,295 – €28,797 | 11% | Second band |
| €28,798 – €82,341 | 30% | Third band |
| €82,342 – €177,106 | 41% | Fourth band |
| €177,107+ | 45% | Top band |
The quotient familial: single vs married/PACS
The quotient familial splits taxable income across parts before applying the scale. A single person uses 1 part; a married or PACS couple uses 2 parts, which effectively doubles each threshold. This calculator models that by offering a Married/PACS option with doubled bands, so a couple with €50,000 of joint income pays far less than a single person on €50,000. The bigger the income gap between spouses, the larger the saving. Additional parts for children (and the plafonnement that caps their benefit) are not modelled here.
Yearly indexation of the brackets
Each loi de finances usually indexes the bracket thresholds for inflation while keeping the rates (0/11/30/41/45%) stable. The tax-free slice rose from €10,777 (2023) to €11,294 (2024) and €11,497 (2025), and the other bands rose proportionally. A higher set of thresholds means slightly less tax at every income level, which is why the same €40,000 salary is taxed a little less in 2025 (€5,165.48) than in 2023 (€5,593.71).
What this calculator does not include
For clarity this estimate covers national income tax only. It excludes additional parts for children and the plafonnement du quotient familial, the décote that reduces tax for modest incomes, the 10% abattement for professional expenses, the contribution exceptionnelle sur les hauts revenus (high-income surtax), tax credits and reductions, and social charges (CSG/CRDS), which apply to a different base. For an exact figure use the DGFiP simulator or consult a tax adviser.
