How to use South Korea Income Tax Calculator

This South Korea income tax calculator estimates your national income tax and National Pension based on your annual income and the tax year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026). Korea uses a progressive schedule running from 6% up to 45%, and the brackets have been unchanged since the 1 January 2023 reform — so all four years share the same rates. The calculator shows your effective rate, marginal rate and a band-by-band breakdown plus estimated take-home. Note: a separate local income tax equal to 10% of your national tax also applies and is explained below.

  1. Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your annual gross income in Korean won (₩).
  3. Keep the filing status as Individual — Korea taxes individuals on the progressive schedule.
  4. Click Calculate to see your national income tax, National Pension, effective rate and marginal rate.
  5. Review the band-by-band breakdown, then add 10% of the national tax for the local income tax.

How South Korean tax brackets work

Korea uses a progressive national income tax: each bracket applies only to the income within its range, not your whole income. On ₩60,000,000 in 2024 you pay 6% on the first ₩14,000,000 (₩840,000), 15% on the next ₩36,000,000 (₩5,400,000), and 24% on the remaining ₩10,000,000 (₩2,400,000), totalling ₩8,640,000 in national income tax — an effective rate of about 14.4%, well below the 24% marginal rate. The bottom band is taxed at 6% from the first won; tax-free treatment in Korea comes from earned-income and personal deductions, which this estimator does not model.

The local income tax (an extra 10%)

On top of national income tax, Korea levies a local income tax equal to 10% of your national income tax, paid to your city or province. So if your national tax is ₩8,640,000, the local income tax is ₩864,000, for a combined ₩9,504,000. Because the local tax is a percentage of the computed tax rather than of income, this calculator reports the national figure and you simply add 10% to get the all-in amount. The local income tax is not included in the take-home figure shown.

National Pension and other social insurance

Employees in Korea pay four social insurances: National Pension, National Health Insurance, Long-term Care, and Employment Insurance. This calculator models the National Pension at 4.5% of your standard-income base, capped at the monthly ceiling (₩6,170,000 in 2024, ₩6,370,000 from July 2025). On ₩60,000,000 that is ₩2,700,000; income above the ceiling adds no further pension. The pension is shown separately and subtracted in your take-home figure; the other three insurances are not modelled.

Effective versus marginal tax rate

Your effective tax rate is total national tax divided by total income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next won, set by the highest band you reach. On ₩60,000,000 in 2024 your marginal rate is 24%, but because the lower bands use smaller rates your effective national tax rate is about 14.4%. Knowing the difference helps with decisions about overtime, bonuses and year-end settlement (연말정산).
