How to use Savings Goal Calculator

This savings goal calculator tells you exactly how much to set aside to reach a target — a house deposit, emergency fund, holiday or big purchase. Enter your goal amount, what you have already saved, your interest rate and either a deadline or a monthly contribution, and it solves for the missing piece: the monthly amount needed, or the time it will take. A growth chart shows your balance climbing toward the goal.

  1. Enter your savings goal (the target amount).
  2. Add any amount you have already saved.
  3. Set the interest rate your savings account earns.
  4. Enter either your monthly contribution or your target date.
  5. Review the required monthly amount or time-to-goal and the chart.

Your data never leaves your device — 100% private processing.

Solving for contribution or time

A savings goal has two common questions: "how much per month do I need?" given a deadline, or "how long will it take?" given a contribution. Both use the future-value-of-an-annuity formula combined with growth on your existing balance. Earning interest reduces the amount you personally need to contribute, though for short horizons the contribution itself does most of the work.

Building an emergency fund first

Before saving for discretionary goals, most planners recommend an emergency fund of three to six months of essential expenses kept in an easily accessible, interest-bearing account. Automating a fixed transfer on payday ("pay yourself first") is the most reliable way to hit any savings target consistently.
