How to use Canada Income Tax Calculator
This Canada income tax calculator estimates your combined federal and provincial income tax based on your annual income, province and the tax year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026). Canada stacks a federal bracket schedule on top of a separate provincial one, so your total rate depends on where you live. The calculator shows your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket-by-bracket breakdown and mandatory CPP and EI contributions, so you can see your estimated take-home pay across all 13 provinces and territories.
- Select the tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026).
- Choose your province or territory of residence for year-end tax purposes.
- Enter your annual gross employment income.
- Review federal tax, provincial tax, CPP, EI, and total estimated take-home values.
- Use compare mode to evaluate year-over-year changes or relocation scenarios.

How Canadian income tax is layered
Canada applies income tax in two layers. First, federal CRA brackets are applied to taxable income. Second, your province or territory applies its own progressive schedule. Your total income tax is the sum of both layers before payroll deductions like CPP and EI. This is why moving provinces with the same salary can materially change take-home pay.
Marginal rate vs effective rate for salary decisions
A raise is not taxed at one flat rate on your whole salary. Only the portion of income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket rate. Your marginal rate helps estimate tax on extra income (bonus, overtime, side contract), while your effective rate is better for budgeting annual cash flow.
CPP and EI contribution caps
CPP and EI are payroll deductions with annual maximums. Once your year-to-date income passes the contribution ceiling, additional salary no longer increases that deduction for the remainder of the year. This is why monthly net pay can change later in the year for higher earners.
