Equal splits versus share-based splits
An equal split divides the full total — subtotal plus tax and tip — by the number of people, which is fair when everyone ordered roughly the same. A share-based split is better when contributions differ: assign each person a weight and the total is divided in proportion, so someone who ordered a main and drinks pays more than someone who only had a coffee. Both methods add tax and tip to the whole bill first, then divide, which keeps the shared charges proportional rather than flat.

Tipping and tax around the world
Tipping norms vary widely: 15–20% is customary in the United States, around 10% in much of Europe where service is often already included, and tipping is uncommon or even discouraged in countries like Japan. Sales tax also differs — some regions show tax-inclusive prices while others add it at the till.
