How to use Switzerland Income Tax Calculator

This Switzerland income tax calculator estimates your federal direct tax (direkte Bundessteuer) for the year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026) using the official Federal Tax Administration (FTA) single and married schedules. Enter your annual income to see your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket-by-bracket breakdown and an estimated take-home figure. IMPORTANT: Switzerland taxes income at three levels — federal, cantonal and municipal — and this tool models only the small, uniform federal layer. Cantonal and municipal taxes vary hugely by location and typically add around 2–3× the federal amount, so your total bill is substantially higher than the figure shown here.

  1. Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your annual taxable income in Swiss francs (CHF).
  3. Choose your filing status — single (basic tariff) or married (married tariff).
  4. Click Calculate to see your estimated federal tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
  5. Review the bracket-by-bracket breakdown — and remember cantonal/municipal tax adds substantially on top.

How Swiss income tax works (three levels)

Switzerland levies income tax at three levels: the Confederation (federal direct tax), the canton, and the municipality. The federal direct tax is uniform across the country and mildly progressive, with a tax-free band and a top marginal rate of just 11.5%. On top of that, each of the 26 cantons applies its own schedule, and every municipality applies a multiplier (Steuerfuss) to the cantonal base. The cantonal + municipal portion is by far the largest and is what makes overall tax burdens differ so much between, say, Zug and Geneva. This calculator models only the federal layer.

Cantonal and municipal taxes — the bigger part

The federal figure this tool produces is only a small slice of your real tax. Cantonal and municipal income taxes, levied separately, generally add around 2–3× the federal amount, and the total varies dramatically by canton and commune. Low-tax cantons such as Zug, Schwyz and Nidwalden have far lower burdens than Geneva, Vaud or Bern. There is no single national cantonal schedule to model, so we deliberately exclude it and flag the gap rather than show a misleading number. For your full liability, use the FTA online calculator or your cantonal tax administration.

Single vs married tariff

Married couples in Switzerland are assessed jointly, and the federal schedule compensates with a much flatter married tariff (Verheiratetentarif) that also applies to single parents. It has a larger tax-free band and gentler rate increases than the single basic tariff (Grundtarif). For example, in 2024 the married tax-free band is CHF 28,800 versus CHF 14,800 for singles. Pick the schedule that matches your situation with the filing status selector.

What this calculator does not include

For clarity, this estimate covers federal direct tax only. It excludes cantonal and municipal income tax (the largest part of the bill), wealth tax, church tax, deductions (pillar 3a contributions, commuting, childcare, insurance premiums, etc.), occupational pension (BVG/LPP) contributions, and the special flat rate on very high incomes. The AHV/IV/EO and ALV social contributions shown are for take-home estimation. For an exact figure, use the FTA or consult a Swiss tax adviser.
