How to use Solar Panel Savings Calculator

This solar savings calculator estimates how much a rooftop solar system could cut your electricity bill, how long it takes to pay back, and the lifetime savings over the system’s life. Enter your bill or usage, system size and local sun and rates to see the payback period and long-term return — the numbers that actually decide whether going solar makes financial sense.

  1. Enter your average monthly electricity bill or usage.
  2. Add the proposed system size and installed cost.
  3. Include local sun-hours and your electricity rate.
  4. Apply any tax credits or incentives.
  5. Review annual savings, payback period and lifetime return.

How solar savings and payback work

A system’s yearly generation (size in kW × sun-hours × 365 × efficiency) offsets grid electricity at your rate. Annual savings equal the value of that generation. Payback period = net system cost (after incentives) ÷ annual savings. After payback, the electricity is essentially free for the remaining system life, typically 20–25+ years.

Incentives, rates and assumptions

Tax credits, rebates and net-metering rules dramatically change the economics, often cutting payback to under ten years. Rising utility rates increase future savings, while panel degradation (~0.5%/yr) slightly reduces output over time. Treat the result as an estimate and confirm incentives and net-metering terms for your area.
