How to use Sweden Income Tax Calculator

This Sweden income tax calculator estimates your tax on earned income for the year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026) using a combined model: municipal tax (kommunalskatt) at the national average of about 32%, plus an extra 20% state tax (statlig inkomstskatt) on income above the upper threshold (skiktgräns). Enter your annual income to see your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home. Municipal tax actually varies by municipality (≈ 29%–35%), so the national average is used and your real figure may differ by a few percentage points.

  1. Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your annual earned income (salary and similar).
  3. Leave the filing status as Individual — Sweden assesses individuals.
  4. Click Calculate to see your estimated income tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
  5. Review the bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home pay.

How Swedish income tax works

Sweden taxes earned income in two layers. First, municipal tax (kommunalskatt) is a flat rate charged by your municipality — about 32% on average nationally. Second, an extra state tax (statlig inkomstskatt) of 20% is added on taxable income above the upper threshold (skiktgräns). This calculator merges the two into a simple scale: about 32% up to the threshold, and about 52% above it. A single filer on SEK 500,000 in 2025 pays roughly SEK 152,000 here (all municipal, below the threshold), before the job tax credit.

The municipal average explained

Unlike a single national rate, Swedish municipal tax is set locally and ranges from roughly 29% to 35% across the 290 municipalities. Picking one figure for the whole country means using the national average of about 32%. That is why this calculator does not ask for your municipality and why your real tax may differ by a few percentage points. Above the skiktgräns, the additional 20% state tax is the same everywhere in Sweden.

The basic allowance (grundavdrag)

Before tax is calculated, Sweden grants a basic allowance (grundavdrag). In reality it is income-dependent — roughly SEK 16,500 to SEK 40,000 — and tapers as income rises. To keep the bracket math transparent and predictable, this calculator applies a simplified flat allowance of SEK 24,000. The skiktgräns thresholds are applied to income after this allowance, so the gross income at which state tax begins is a little above the published skiktgräns figure.

What this calculator does not include

For clarity, this estimate covers earned-income tax using the national average municipal rate plus the 20% state tax, with a simplified basic allowance. It excludes your exact municipal rate, the income-dependent grundavdrag, the jobbskatteavdrag (earned-income tax credit, which lowers real tax for workers), the 7% general pension contribution (allmän pensionsavgift, which is fully tax-credited), capital income tax (flat 30%) and the church fee. For an exact figure, use Skatteverket or consult a Swedish tax adviser.
