How to use Netherlands Income Tax Calculator
This Netherlands income tax calculator estimates your Box 1 income tax (income from work and home) for the year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026) using the Belastingdienst rates. Enter your annual income to see your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home. For taxpayers below state pension (AOW) age, the lower brackets combine income tax with national insurance premiums, so the headline rate is high — and the general and labour tax credits, which sharply reduce real tax, are explained but not auto-applied.
- Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
- Enter your annual Box 1 income (income from work and home).
- Leave the filing status as Individual — the Netherlands assesses individuals.
- Click Calculate to see your estimated income tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
- Review the bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home pay (before credits).

How Dutch Box 1 income tax works
The Netherlands taxes income in three "boxes". Box 1 covers income from work and home — salary, self-employment profits and the owner-occupied home — and is taxed on a progressive scale. For taxpayers below state pension (AOW) age, the lower brackets combine income tax with national insurance premiums (AOW, Anw, Wlz), so a single euro of salary is taxed at roughly 36–37% in the lower band before any credits. A single filer on €50,000 in 2025 sees about €18,100 of gross tax here, but the tax credits below reduce the real figure substantially.
| Taxable Income | Combined Rate | Band |
|---|---|---|
| €0 – €38,441 | 35.82% | First bracket (income tax + national insurance) |
| €38,441 – €76,817 | 37.48% | Second bracket |
| €76,817+ | 49.50% | Top rate |
The combined rate explained
Unlike most countries, the headline Dutch rate in the lower brackets is not pure income tax. It bundles the premie volksverzekeringen — national insurance for the state pension (AOW), survivors (Anw) and long-term care (Wlz). That is why the first rate is around 36–37% rather than a low entry rate. Above the premium ceiling the top rate of 49.50% is income tax only. People over AOW age pay a lower combined rate because they no longer contribute to the AOW premium; this calculator models the below-AOW-age rates.
Tax credits: why your real tax is lower
Two large credits reduce the tax you actually pay: the algemene heffingskorting (general tax credit) and the arbeidskorting (labour tax credit). Both are income-dependent and phase out as you earn more, so they cannot be cleanly built into flat brackets. This calculator therefore shows gross tax before credits and flags that your real liability is lower — often by several thousand euros for a typical salary. For an exact figure including your personal credits, use the Belastingdienst calculation tools.
What this calculator does not include
For clarity, this estimate covers Box 1 income tax (with national insurance folded in) before credits. It excludes the heffingskorting and arbeidskorting, the lower AOW-age rates, Box 2 (substantial-interest income), Box 3 (savings and investments), and deductions such as mortgage interest relief (hypotheekrenteaftrek), the 30% ruling for expats and self-employment deductions (zelfstandigenaftrek). For an exact figure, use the Belastingdienst or consult a Dutch tax adviser.
