How to use Kenya Income Tax Calculator
This Kenya income tax calculator estimates your PAYE (Pay As You Earn) plus NSSF and the Affordable Housing Levy based on your annual income and the tax year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 — 2026 is the latest). Kenya uses progressive annual bands collected by the KRA; from 1 July 2023 the schedule runs 10%, 25%, 30%, 32.5% and 35%, so 2024, 2025 and 2026 share those rates, while 2023 uses the older schedule that topped out at 30%. The 2026 NSSF upper earnings limit rises to KES 72,000/month as the NSSF Act rollout reaches Year 3. The calculator shows your effective rate, marginal rate and a band-by-band breakdown plus an estimated take-home. Note: a personal relief of KES 28,800/year is then subtracted from your PAYE — see the breakdown below.
- Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
- Enter your annual gross income in Kenyan shillings (salary before tax).
- Keep the filing status as Individual — Kenya assesses individuals for PAYE.
- Click Calculate to see your PAYE, NSSF, housing levy, effective rate and marginal rate.
- Review the band-by-band breakdown, then subtract the KES 28,800 personal relief for net PAYE.

How Kenya PAYE bands work
Kenya uses a progressive PAYE schedule that taxes only the income within each band, not your whole income. On KES 1,200,000 in 2025 you pay 10% on the first KES 288,000 (KES 28,800), 25% on the next KES 100,000 (KES 25,000) and 30% on the remaining KES 812,000 (KES 243,600) — about KES 297,400 in gross PAYE, an effective rate near 24.8% well below the 30% marginal rate. The KES 28,800 personal relief is then subtracted to give the PAYE actually withheld.
| Annual Income (KES) | Tax Rate | Band |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 288,000 | 10% | First KES 288,000 |
| 288,001 – 388,000 | 25% | Next KES 100,000 |
| 388,001 – 6,000,000 | 30% | Next KES 5,612,000 |
| 6,000,001 – 9,600,000 | 32.5% | Next KES 3,600,000 |
| Over 9,600,000 | 35% | Top band |
Personal relief, NSSF and the Affordable Housing Levy
Every resident gets a personal relief of KES 28,800 per year (KES 2,400 per month) that is subtracted directly from the PAYE computed on the bands above — it is a tax rebate, not an income deduction, which is why low earners often pay no PAYE at all. On top of PAYE, employees contribute to NSSF (6% of pensionable pay, capped at the upper earnings limit — KES 18,000/month in 2024 and KES 36,000/month from 2025) and the Affordable Housing Levy of 1.5% of gross pay. This calculator subtracts NSSF and the housing levy in your take-home figure.
Effective versus marginal tax rate
Your effective tax rate is your total PAYE divided by total income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next shilling, set by the highest band you reach. On KES 1,200,000 in 2025 your marginal rate is 30%, but because the first KES 288,000 is taxed at only 10% and the personal relief reduces the total, your effective rate is lower. Knowing the difference helps with decisions about overtime, bonuses and allowances.
No county or regional income tax
Unlike the United States, Kenya has no county or regional personal income tax. PAYE is national and collected by the KRA, so your PAYE plus NSSF and the housing levy is the full payroll picture for a salaried worker — there is no extra county layer to add, which is why this calculator has no region selector.
