How to use Iceland Income Tax Calculator
This Iceland income tax calculator estimates your personal income tax on the combined national and municipal scale based on your income and the year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 — 2026 is the latest). Iceland uses one three-band progressive schedule: for 2026 the combined rates are 31.49% up to ISK 5,977,464, 37.99% up to ISK 16,781,400 and 46.29% above. A fixed personal tax credit (persónuafsláttur) of ISK 869,904 a year reduces the tax due, modelled as a 0% first band of about ISK 2,762,477, so lower incomes pay nothing. The calculator also models the mandatory 4% employee pension premium and shows your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket breakdown and your take-home in krona.
- Select your income year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) — the thresholds and credit are indexed each year.
- Enter your annual gross income in Icelandic krona (ISK).
- Keep the filing status as Individual — Iceland assesses income tax per person.
- Click Calculate to see your income tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
- Review the bracket breakdown and your take-home after the 4% pension premium.

How Iceland’s combined scale works
Iceland levies one three-band progressive schedule that combines national income tax with the municipal tax (útsvar), using an average municipal rate of 14.94%. For 2026 the combined rates are 31.49% up to ISK 5,977,464, 37.99% up to ISK 16,781,400 and 46.29% above. Only the income within each band is taxed at that band’s rate. The fixed personal tax credit of ISK 869,904 a year is modelled as a 0% first band of ISK 2,762,477, so income up to that level pays no income tax.
| Annual income (ISK) | Combined rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 2,762,477 | 0% | Covered by the personal tax credit |
| 2,762,477 – 5,977,464 | 31.49% | National 16.55% + municipal 14.94% |
| 5,977,464 – 16,781,400 | 37.99% | National 23.05% + municipal 14.94% |
| Over 16,781,400 | 46.29% | National 31.35% + municipal 14.94% |
Personal tax credit and the pension premium
The personal tax credit (persónuafsláttur) is a flat ISK 72,492 per month — ISK 869,904 a year — subtracted from your computed tax, which the calculator models as the 0% first band. Employees also pay a mandatory pension fund premium (lífeyrissjóður) of 4% of total employment income, with the employer adding 11.5%; the 4% employee share is subtracted in your take-home. In law the 4% is deducted before income tax, while this tool applies the bands to gross income, so income tax is a slight upper bound and take-home a slight lower bound.
Effective versus marginal tax rate
Your effective tax rate is your total income tax divided by total income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next krona, set by the highest band you reach. On ISK 4,000,000 in 2026 your marginal rate is 31.49% but your effective rate is only about 9.7%, because the personal tax credit wipes out tax on the first ISK 2,762,477. On ISK 6,000,000 the effective rate is about 17%.
