How to use Denmark Income Tax Calculator
This Denmark income tax calculator estimates what an employee pays under Denmark’s layered wage-tax system based on your annual income and the tax year you select. Choose between 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Denmark first takes an 8% labour market contribution (AM-bidrag) from your gross pay, then taxes income above the personal allowance (personfradrag) with the bottom-bracket state tax (bundskat), your municipal tax (kommuneskat) and, on higher incomes, the top-bracket tax (topskat) — capped by the 52.07% tax ceiling. The calculator merges these into one schedule, adds the 8% AM-bidrag, then shows your effective rate, marginal rate and a full bracket breakdown.
- Select your tax year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
- Enter your annual gross income in Danish kroner (løn before tax).
- Keep the filing status as Individual — Denmark taxes individuals separately.
- Click Calculate to see your income tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
- Review the bracket-by-bracket breakdown and your estimated take-home after AM-bidrag.

How Denmark’s layered wage tax works
Denmark builds your wage tax from several layers. First, an 8% labour market contribution (AM-bidrag) is taken from your gross pay. Then your income above the personal allowance (personfradrag) is taxed by the bottom-bracket state tax (bundskat, 12.01% in 2024–2026) plus your municipal tax (kommuneskat, about 25% on average) — together roughly 37%. On higher incomes a top-bracket tax (topskat) of 15% is added, and the combined state-plus-municipal rate is capped by the 52.07% tax ceiling (skatteloft). This calculator collapses those layers into a single progressive schedule applied to your gross income, with the personfradrag as a 0% band, and shows the 8% AM-bidrag separately. For example, on DKK 400,000 in 2025 the income tax is about DKK 129,180 — an effective rate near 32.3%, below the 37.1% marginal rate — plus DKK 32,000 of AM-bidrag.
| Annual income (DKK) | Combined marginal rate | How it is built |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 51,600 | 0% | Personal allowance (personfradrag) |
| 51,600 – 611,800 | 37.078% | Bundskat 12.01% + average kommuneskat 25.068% |
| Over 611,800 | 52.07% | + topskat 15%, capped at the skatteloft tax ceiling |
The 2026 reform: middle, top and top-top tax
From 2026 Denmark replaces the single 15% topskat with three steps. A middle tax (mellemskat) of 7.5% starts at DKK 641,200, a top tax (topskat) of 7.5% starts at DKK 777,900, and a new top-top tax (top-topskat) of 5% starts at DKK 2,592,700 (all measured after AM-bidrag). Stacked on the ~37% bottom rate, the marginal rate climbs through 44.6% and 52.1% to about 57.1% — roughly 60.5% once you include the 8% AM-bidrag. The personal allowance also rises to DKK 54,100. So a high earner on DKK 900,000 in 2026 pays about DKK 342,050 in income tax, an effective rate near 38%, with a 52.1% marginal rate. Use the year selector to compare 2025 and 2026 side by side.
Why your kommune matters, and the tax ceiling
Municipal tax (kommuneskat) is set by each of Denmark’s 98 municipalities and ranges from about 23% to 26%, so the same salary is taxed a little differently depending on where you live. This calculator uses the national weighted average (about 25%), so treat the result as a default estimate rather than a kommune-exact figure. To stop the combined burden running away, Denmark applies a tax ceiling (skatteloft): for 2023–2025 your total state-plus-municipal income tax cannot exceed 52.07%, which is why the top band is modelled at exactly 52.07%. The optional church tax (~0.7% for members of the Danish State Church) is not included.
Effective versus marginal tax rate in Denmark
Your effective tax rate is your total income tax divided by income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next krone, set by the highest band you reach (plus the 8% AM-bidrag, which is charged on every krone). On DKK 400,000 in 2025 your marginal income-tax rate is about 37% but your effective income-tax rate is only about 32%, because the personal allowance and the lower bands apply first. At DKK 800,000, where you cross the topskat line, the marginal rate is 52.07% while the effective rate is around 38.2%. Knowing the gap helps you judge the real after-tax value of a bonus, overtime or a pay rise.
