How to use Brazil Income Tax Calculator

This Brazil income tax calculator estimates your IRPF (Imposto de Renda Pessoa Física) and INSS social security based on your annual income and the year you select. Brazil applies a monthly progressive table (tabela progressiva); this tool annualises it (×12) so you can work in yearly figures. Choose 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 — 2024 onward uses the table effective May 2024 (exempt up to R$2,259.20/month), while 2023 uses the smaller R$2,112.00/month exemption. The 2026 year carries forward the latest available rules. You get your effective rate, marginal rate, a band-by-band breakdown and an estimated take-home figure after IRPF and INSS.

  1. Select your year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your annual gross income in reais (salary before tax).
  3. Keep the filing status as Individual — Brazil taxes individuals (pessoa física).
  4. Click Calculate to see your IRPF, INSS, effective rate and marginal rate.
  5. Review the band-by-band breakdown and your estimated take-home pay.

How Brazilian IRPF brackets work

Brazil uses a progressive table that taxes only the income within each band, not your whole income. The official table is monthly; this calculator multiplies the thresholds by 12 to work annually. On R$60,000 in 2024 you pay nothing on the first R$27,110.40, 7.5% on the next R$6,809.40 (R$510.71), 15% on R$11,092.80 (R$1,663.92), 22.5% on R$10,963.56 (R$2,466.80) and 27.5% on the final R$4,023.84 (R$1,106.56) — about R$5,747.98 in IRPF, an effective rate near 9.6% well below the 27.5% top rate.

INSS social security

Employees in Brazil pay INSS social security, withheld from salary up to a monthly ceiling (R$7,786.02 in 2024, R$8,157.41 in 2025). The real contribution is progressive across 7.5%, 9%, 12% and 14% bands; for a simple annual estimate this calculator applies a flat 11% effective rate capped at the annual ceiling. On R$60,000 that is R$6,600; income above the ceiling adds no further INSS. INSS is shown separately and subtracted in your take-home figure.

Effective versus marginal tax rate

Your effective tax rate is total IRPF divided by total income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next real earned, set by the highest band you reach. On R$60,000 in 2024 your marginal rate is 27.5%, but because the first R$27,110.40 is exempt and the lower bands use smaller rates, your effective IRPF rate is only about 9.6%. Knowing the difference helps with decisions about overtime, bonuses and the 13th salary.

No state or municipal income tax

Unlike the United States, Brazil has no state or municipal personal income tax. Personal income tax (IRPF) is federal and collected by Receita Federal, so your IRPF plus INSS is the full picture for a salaried worker — there is no extra regional layer, which is why this calculator has no region selector.
