How to use Malta Income Tax Calculator

This Malta income tax calculator estimates your personal income tax on the single, married or parent rate tables based on your income and the basis year you select (2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 — 2026 is the latest). Malta taxes only the income within each band at that band’s rate, and each status has a tax-free 0% band followed by 15%, 25% and 35% bands, with the 35% rate above €60,000. The 0% band is €12,000 for single, €15,000 for married (joint computation) and €13,000 for parent rates. The calculator reproduces the official subtraction-method tax exactly, models the 10% Class 1 social security contribution, and shows your effective rate, marginal rate, a bracket breakdown and your take-home in euros.

  1. Select your basis year (2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026) — the base rate tables are unchanged since 2025.
  2. Enter your annual income in euros.
  3. Choose your status — Single, Married (joint) or Parent rates.
  4. Click Calculate to see your income tax, effective rate and marginal rate.
  5. Review the bracket breakdown and your take-home after the 10% Class 1 contribution.

Single, married and parent rate tables

Malta has no separate personal allowance — the tax-free portion is delivered by a 0% first band that differs by status: €12,000 for single, €15,000 for married couples computing jointly, and €13,000 for the parent rates. Each table then applies 15%, 25% and 35%, with the 35% rate above €60,000. Because the official tables are continuous, the calculator’s marginal brackets reproduce the subtraction-method tax exactly. For example, single income tax on €30,000 is €30,000 × 25% − €3,400 = €4,100.

Class 1 social security and 2026 changes

Employees born on or after 1 January 1962 pay a Class 1 social security contribution of 10% of the basic wage. In 2026 it is capped at €55.93 per week for salaries above €29,084 — an employee maximum of about €2,908 a year — with a weekly minimum-wage floor; the employer pays a matching 10%. The base single, married and parent rate tables are unchanged from 2025. New for 2026, qualifying parents of children under 18 (or under 23 in full-time education) can claim wider "with children" bands, which are documented but not modelled here.

Effective versus marginal tax rate

Your effective tax rate is your total income tax divided by total income — your true average. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next euro, set by the highest band you reach. On €30,000 single in 2026 your marginal rate is 25% but your effective rate is only about 13.7%, because the €12,000 tax-free band and the 15% band apply first. Married and parent rates lower the effective rate further on the same income.
