How to use ZIP / Postal Code Lookup

The ZIP / Postal Code Lookup finds the location behind any postal code. Choose a country, enter the code, and the tool returns the matching city or place name, the state or region, and the precise latitude and longitude. It covers the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada and many more — useful for shipping, form validation, geocoding, research and travel planning.

  1. Select the country from the dropdown (codes follow the two-letter ISO standard).
  2. Type the ZIP or postal code in that country's usual format.
  3. Press Look up (or hit Enter) to query the Zippopotam.us API.
  4. Read the place name(s), state or region, and latitude/longitude in the results.

Your query is sent to Zippopotam.usto fetch results. We don't store it.

Postal code formats around the world

Every country structures its postal codes differently, which is why you must pick the country first. The United States uses a five-digit ZIP code (optionally a nine-digit ZIP+4). The United Kingdom uses an alphanumeric postcode split into an outward and inward part, such as SW1A 1AA. Germany and France use five digits, while the Netherlands combines four digits with two letters. Entering a code in the wrong format — or for the wrong country — is the most common reason a lookup returns no result.

What the lookup returns and its limits

For a valid code the tool returns the post code, the country and its abbreviation, and one or more places — each with a place name, state or region (with abbreviation where provided), and latitude/longitude. The coordinates mark the centre of the postal area rather than an exact address, so they are ideal for mapping and rough distance work but not for navigation to a specific building. A "not found" response simply means the code is absent from the dataset for the selected country; double-check the country and the code format and try again.
