How to use Fraction Calculator

The fraction calculator performs addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on two fractions and returns the result in its simplest form, as a mixed number and as a decimal. Step-by-step working is shown for each operation so you can understand and verify the method, making this ideal for homework, tutoring and learning fraction arithmetic.

Fraction arithmetic rules

Addition and subtraction require a common denominator: find the LCD, convert both fractions, then add or subtract numerators. Multiplication is simpler — multiply numerators together and denominators together, then simplify. Division is multiplication by the reciprocal: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c). Always simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD).

Converting fractions, decimals and percentages

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator: 3/4 = 0.75. To convert to a percentage, multiply the decimal by 100: 0.75 = 75%. To convert a decimal back to a fraction, write the decimal over the appropriate power of 10 and simplify: 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4. Improper fractions (where numerator > denominator) can also be expressed as mixed numbers: 7/4 = 1 3/4.

Worked examples

Add fractions

Inputs: 1/2 + 1/3

Result: 5/6 ≈ 0.833

Divide fractions

Inputs: 1/2 ÷ 3/4

Result: 2/3 ≈ 0.667

Multiply and simplify

Inputs: 2/3 × 3/4

Result: 1/2 = 0.5

Glossary

LCD
Least Common Denominator — smallest number divisible by both denominators.
GCD
Greatest Common Divisor — the largest factor shared by numerator and denominator.
Mixed number
A whole number combined with a proper fraction, e.g. 1 3/4.
Reciprocal
The multiplicative inverse of a fraction: flip numerator and denominator.
