How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. Grade points = Grade Value × Credit Hours for each course. A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0... Sum all grade points and divide by total credits.

Can I raise my GPA significantly?

The more credits you have, the harder it is to move your GPA. With 60 credits at 2.5 GPA, you'd need a 4.0 in 40 more credits to reach 3.1. Use the "What grade do I need?" calculator to set realistic goals.

How do I combine my semester GPA with my overall GPA?

Convert both to quality points: multiply each GPA by its credit hours, add the two totals, then divide by the combined credits. A prior 3.0 over 60 credits plus a 3.6 semester over 15 credits gives (180 + 54) ÷ 75 = 3.12 cumulative.

What GPA do I need this semester to hit my target?

Use the goal planner: needed GPA = (target × total credits − current points) ÷ future credits. To lift a 2.8 over 60 credits to 3.0 across 30 more credits you need (3.0 × 90 − 168) ÷ 30 = 3.4. If the result exceeds 4.0 the target is out of reach in that span.

Why does my GPA barely move once I have lots of credits?

Each new grade is averaged against everything you have already earned. With 90 completed credits, one 15-credit semester is only about a sixth of the total, so even straight A grades shift the cumulative figure slightly. Early grades are far easier to change than later ones.

Does retaking a course replace the old grade?

It depends on your school's grade-replacement policy. Some institutions replace the original grade in your GPA; others average both attempts or keep both on the transcript. This calculator makes no assumption — enter only the grades your school actually counts.

Combining semester and cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA = (previous quality points + current quality points) ÷ (previous credits + current credits). This means a single poor semester has less impact as total credits grow. Conversely, recovering from a low GPA early in a degree is far easier than late — because fewer future credits are available to dilute the low early grades.

Using the goal planner strategically

To raise a GPA of 2.8 to 3.0 with 60 credits completed over the next 30 credits, the required GPA is: (3.0 × 90 − 2.8 × 60) / 30 = (270 − 168) / 30 = 3.4. This models the mathematical recovery path. If the required GPA exceeds the scale maximum (4.0), the target is mathematically impossible in the specified number of credits.
