How to use Final Exam Grade Calculator

The final grade calculator tells you exactly what score you need on your final exam to achieve a desired overall course grade. Enter your current grade, the final exam's percentage weight and your target grade; the tool applies the reverse-weighted-average formula and also tells you whether the goal is achievable or requires extra credit.

  1. Enter your current course grade as a percentage.
  2. Enter the final exam weight as a percentage of the total course grade.
  3. Enter your desired final grade.
  4. Click Calculate Needed Score to see the required exam score.

The reverse weighted-average formula

The formula is: needed = (desired − current × (1 − exam_weight/100)) ÷ (exam_weight/100). For example: current grade 75%, exam weight 30%, desired 80%: needed = (80 − 75 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (80 − 52.5) / 0.30 = 91.7%. If the result exceeds 100%, the target requires extra credit; above ~116% it is mathematically impossible.

Strategic use before exams

Calculating the needed exam score before studying lets you calibrate effort appropriately. If you need only 55% to pass and are already confident in the material, you might shift study time elsewhere. If you need 98%, you know the exam is critical and should prioritise accordingly. The tool also helps identify whether retaking an assignment (when permitted) would meaningfully change the needed exam score.
