How to use Country Explorer — Capital, Flag, Population & Facts

The Country Explorer looks up any country by name and returns its flag, capital city, geographic region and subregion, total population, official languages and circulating currencies. Students, quiz-makers, travellers and trivia fans use it to verify facts quickly, compare nations and settle geography questions — all sourced from the open-source world-countries dataset.

  1. Type a country name into the search box, using the common English name.
  2. Press Explore (or hit Enter) to look up the facts from the built-in country dataset.
  3. Review the flag, official name, capital, region and subregion at the top of the result.
  4. Scroll the details grid for population, official languages, currencies and the country code.

How country facts are organized

Each country record bundles several standard facts. The capital is the seat of government; the region (such as Asia or Europe) and the finer-grained subregion (such as Eastern Asia) place the country geographically. Population is the total number of inhabitants, shown here with thousands separators. The two-letter ISO 3166 code (e.g. JP for Japan) and the internet top-level domain (e.g. .jp) identify the country in databases and on the web. The example below shows how a handful of countries break down.

Understanding regions, languages and currencies

Regions group countries into broad continents while subregions split them further, which is useful for comparisons and study. Official languages are those with legal status in the country, and many nations have several. Currencies are listed with their ISO 4217 code (USD, EUR, JPY) and, where available, a symbol. Because the data is drawn from a community dataset, treat population counts as close estimates rather than live census figures, and use the common English name when a country has several local or historical names.

Play the Flags Quiz multiplayer with friends

Beyond exploring country facts, this tool runs a multiplayer Flags Quiz. Choose "Play with friends", create a room, and share the code so everyone identifies the same seeded sequence of flags. Points reward both speed and accuracy, and a live leaderboard ranks every player as the round plays out. The shared seed guarantees identical questions for the whole room, making it a fair geography showdown for classrooms, family quiz nights, or trivia with friends across the world. It is a free, no-install browser game with no account required. Discover more quiz and trivia games on the multiplayer games hub.
