How to use GTIN Check Digit Validator & Calculator

Validate or calculate GTIN check digits instantly for GTIN-8, UPC-A (GTIN-12), EAN-13 (GTIN-13), and GTIN-14 codes. Enter a full code to verify validity, or enter the first N-1 digits to compute the final check digit. The tool shows the weighting breakdown from the right side of the number so you can audit the mod-10 math step by step before printing labels or importing catalog data.

  1. Choose validation mode for full codes or calculation mode for stem digits.
  2. Enter digits only (spaces or hyphens are allowed and normalized automatically).
  3. Run the check to detect the GTIN format and compute expected check digit values.
  4. Review the weighted 3/1 multiplication breakdown from the right side of the stem.
  5. Use the validated full code in barcode generation, catalog import, or QA review.

Your data never leaves your device — 100% private processing.

GTIN mod-10 algorithm explained

For GTIN check digits, start from the right side of the stem (excluding the existing check digit) and apply alternating weights 3, 1, 3, 1. Sum each digit multiplied by its weight, then compute the check digit as (10 − sum mod 10) mod 10. This final mod operation handles already-rounded sums cleanly by returning 0 when the weighted total is already divisible by 10. The same pattern applies across GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, and GTIN-14.

Validation workflow for data quality

In real catalog pipelines, GTIN validation is often used before barcode rendering, POS synchronization, and marketplace feed exports. Rejecting invalid lengths and mismatched check digits early prevents costly downstream errors such as unscannable labels or incorrect product mappings. Pairing validation with a visible step-by-step breakdown helps operations teams audit supplier files quickly and explain failures without relying on opaque black-box tools.

Worked examples

EAN-13 validation

Inputs: 4006381333931

Result: Detected EAN-13; check digit 1 matches expected value

GTIN check digit calculation

Inputs: 400638133393

Result: Calculated check digit is 1, yielding full code 4006381333931

Glossary

Check digit
The final control digit of a GTIN, calculated from previous digits to detect input and scanning errors.
Stem digits
All digits in a GTIN except the final check digit, used as input to the check algorithm.
Mod-10
A modulus operation against 10 used to compute the final GTIN check digit from weighted sums.
UPC-A
A 12-digit GTIN format widely used in North American retail environments.
