How to use Noise / Grain Generator

A noise or grain texture is one of the most useful raw materials in design — overlaid lightly it adds film-like grain to photos, reduces visible banding in gradients, and gives flat backgrounds a tactile, organic feel. This generator builds one from scratch at any size you choose, in monochrome film-grain style or full RGB static, and can export it either as a solid texture or as a transparent PNG overlay you drop on top of existing artwork. Everything is generated on a canvas in your browser, so there is no upload, no watermark, and no limit on how many variations you create.

  1. Set the width and height for the texture you need.
  2. Choose monochrome grain or RGB noise.
  3. Enable transparent overlay if you want an alpha PNG.
  4. Adjust the opacity slider for the overlay strength.
  5. Click Download PNG, or Regenerate for a new pattern.

Solid texture versus transparent overlay

The generator has two output modes. A solid texture fills every pixel opaquely and is useful as a standalone background or as a base layer you blend in an editor. A transparent overlay instead exports a PNG with an alpha channel set by the opacity slider, so the noise itself is semi-transparent and can be placed directly over a photo, gradient, or UI without obscuring it. The transparent mode is what you want for the classic "grain on top" effect: drop it over your design, set the layer to a low opacity or a blend mode like overlay, and the texture comes through without darkening the artwork beneath.

Monochrome grain and RGB static

Monochrome mode assigns each pixel a single random brightness applied to all three colour channels, producing neutral gray grain that looks like photographic film or paper texture — the most common choice for subtle overlays. RGB mode randomises red, green, and blue independently, so each pixel becomes a random colour and the result reads as vivid colour static, useful for retro TV-noise or glitch aesthetics. Because every pixel is independent random noise, the texture tiles reasonably well at small scales and never shows an obvious repeat, and regenerating simply reseeds the randomness for an entirely fresh pattern.
