How to use Blur & Pixelate Image

Blur or pixelate any area of a photo directly in your browser — no uploads, no privacy risk. Gaussian blur vs. pixelation: which to use

Gaussian blur applies a mathematically smooth blur kernel that averages each pixel with its neighbours, weighted by a bell-curve function. The result looks natural and photographic, ideal for softening backgrounds or anonymising faces in a visually clean way. Pixelation (mosaic censor) divides the selected region into a grid of solid-colour squares, the classic "censored" look used in broadcast journalism and legal documents. Pixelation is generally considered more legally defensible for identity anonymisation because it is harder to reverse than Gaussian blur, which can theoretically be partially reversed with deconvolution algorithms.

Privacy, GDPR, and anonymisation best practices

Under GDPR and similar privacy laws, images containing identifiable faces, vehicle registration plates, or unique features may constitute personal data. Blurring before publication is the standard editorial and legal practice to protect subject identities. For strong anonymisation, use a high pixelation block size (at least 10–15 px blocks on a 1080p image) or a Gaussian radius of 20 or more. Partial blurs that leave hair, clothing, or context clues may still be identifiable — apply blur generously over the entire face including the hairline and ears.
