How to use Typing Tutor
This typing tutor teaches touch typing through structured, progressive lessons — home row first, then the top and bottom rows, numbers and symbols, common words, and full sentences. As you type, an on-screen keyboard highlights the next key, your words-per-minute and accuracy update live, and a completion summary shows which keys cost you the most so you know what to drill next. Everything runs in your browser with nothing uploaded, and your best score per lesson is remembered on your device.
- Pick a lesson, starting with the home row if you are new to touch typing.
- Rest your fingers on ASDF and JKL; and keep your eyes on the screen.
- Type the prompt, following the highlighted next key on the on-screen keyboard.
- Watch your live WPM and accuracy as you go.
- Finish the lesson, review your worst keys, then repeat or move to the next lesson.
Your data never leaves your device — 100% private processing.
How the lessons progress
Touch typing is learned fastest when keys are introduced in a deliberate order rather than all at once. These lessons begin on the home row, where your fingers rest, then add the top and bottom rows, then numbers and symbols, and finally combine everything into common words and full sentences. Each stage reuses the keys you already know and adds only a few new ones, so your hands extend their reach from a stable base instead of hunting across the whole keyboard. Master each lesson to roughly 95% accuracy before advancing.
| Lesson | Keys introduced |
|---|---|
| Home row | A S D F J K L ; |
| Top row | Q W E R T Y U I O P |
| Bottom row | Z X C V B N M |
| Numbers & symbols | 0–9 and common punctuation |
| Words & sentences | Everything combined |
Accuracy before speed
It is tempting to race, but raw speed built on errors does not last — every mistake you have to fix costs more time than typing slightly slower and cleanly. Aim for smooth, correct keystrokes and let speed follow naturally; this is why the tutor reports accuracy alongside WPM and highlights your weakest keys. Practising the keys you miss most, in short frequent sessions, produces faster gains than long sessions that simply repeat what you already do well.
Worked examples
Home row lesson
Inputs: asdf jkl; repeated drills
Result: Fingers learn their resting positions by feel
Targeting weak keys
Inputs: Error summary flags B and Y
Result: Drill those keys to raise overall accuracy fastest
