Puppy Weight Predictor
Find out your puppy's predicted adult size. Uses breed-size-specific growth curves to estimate full-grown weight from current puppy weight and age.
How to use Puppy Weight Predictor
Estimate your puppy's adult weight based on current weight and age using breed-size growth curves. Knowing your puppy's projected adult size helps you plan for appropriate nutrition, exercise levels, and veterinary care — particularly for large and giant breeds that are at higher risk for growth-related orthopaedic conditions if overfed during the first year.
- Enter your puppy's current age in weeks.
- Enter your puppy's current weight in pounds or kilograms.
- Select breed size category: toy, small, medium, large, or giant.
- The calculator projects the adult weight range and plots the growth curve.

Puppy growth rates by breed size
Puppies reach full adult weight at very different ages depending on size. Toy and small breeds reach their adult weight as early as 8–10 months. Medium breeds reach adult weight around 12 months. Large breeds continue growing until 18 months. Giant breeds (Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Mastiff) may not reach full adult weight until 18–24 months. Overfeeding large and giant breed puppies to accelerate growth is strongly discouraged — rapid bone growth increases the risk of hip dysplasia, OCD, and panosteitis.
| Breed size | Adult weight | Full adult size reached | Growth formula (rule of thumb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy (<5 kg) | <11 lb (5 kg) | 8–10 months | Weight at 6 wks × 4 |
| Small (5–10 kg) | 11–22 lb | 9–12 months | Weight at 8 wks × 4 |
| Medium (10–25 kg) | 22–55 lb | 12–15 months | Weight at 14 wks × 2.5 |
| Large (25–40 kg) | 55–88 lb | 15–18 months | Weight at 14 wks × 2.5 |
| Giant (>40 kg) | >88 lb | 18–24 months | Weight at 14 wks × 2.5–3 |
Nutrition guidelines for growing puppies
Puppy food formulas are specifically designed to support rapid growth, with higher protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus levels than adult maintenance foods. However, for large and giant breeds, excess calcium intake is more dangerous than deficiency — do not supplement calcium in large breed puppies on complete commercial diets. Feed 3 meals/day until 6 months, then 2 meals/day until adulthood. Measure portions to match the puppy's current weight on the bag's feeding guide, adjusting monthly as they grow.
Glossary
- Panosteitis
- A painful bone condition in growing large-breed puppies causing intermittent lameness — often linked to rapid growth.
- Hip dysplasia
- Abnormal development of the hip joint, more common in large and giant breeds — diet and growth rate are modifiable risk factors.
- OCD (Osteochondrosis dissecans)
- A developmental condition where cartilage does not convert to bone properly, linked to rapid growth and high-calorie diets in large breeds.
- Large breed puppy formula
- Pet food specifically formulated for large and giant breed puppies with controlled calcium-to-phosphorus ratios to support safe skeletal development.
