How to use Pet Age (Any Species) Calculator

Convert your pet's age into human-equivalent years for dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and birds. Each species ages at a dramatically different rate — a 1-year-old rabbit is a young adult, while a 1-year-old hamster is already middle-aged. This tool provides life-stage context that helps you align veterinary care, diet, and exercise to your pet's actual biological age.

  1. Select your pet species from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your pet's age in years (or months for small mammals).
  3. The tool returns the human-equivalent age and the pet's current life stage.
  4. Use the life-stage guidance to adjust veterinary visit frequency, diet, and activity level.

Human-equivalent age by species

Different species have vastly different maximum lifespans, leading to different "human age equivalent" scales. Dogs and cats are the most familiar, but companion animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds have their own aging profiles. Small mammals (hamsters, gerbils, mice) have very compressed lifespans, reaching old age within 2–3 years. Parrots are the opposite extreme — large parrots can outlive their owners, with some species (cockatoos, macaws) living 50–80 years.

Life stage and veterinary care by species

Understanding your pet's life stage is essential for scheduling appropriate veterinary care. Small mammals like hamsters and guinea pigs have short lifespans and benefit from quarterly health checks once past 1 year of age. Rabbits are often under-vetted — they require annual check-ups and dental assessments, as dental disease is extremely common in rabbits. For long-lived birds, annual bloodwork from middle age onwards helps detect organ changes early. Regardless of species, life-stage-appropriate diet and an established relationship with a vet are the two most impactful factors in maximising healthy lifespan.

Glossary

Life stage
A defined phase of an animal's life (juvenile, adult, senior) characterised by specific physiological and behavioural attributes.
Allometric scaling
The relationship between an organism's body size and metabolic rate that underpins why smaller animals generally live shorter lives.
Zoonosis
A disease or infection that can be transmitted from animals to humans — relevant when considering exotic pet ownership and age-related immune changes.
Dental disease (exotic pets)
A common condition in rabbits and guinea pigs where continuously growing teeth become misaligned (malocclusion), causing pain and reduced food intake.
