How to use Dog Pregnancy / Gestation Calculator

Track your dog's pregnancy timeline and calculate the expected whelping (birth) date from the date of mating. Canine gestation averages 63 days from ovulation (approximately 65 days from the first mating). This tool provides week-by-week milestones for fetal development, dam care, and preparation for whelping.

  1. Enter the date of the first mating or confirmed ovulation date (if progesterone testing was done).
  2. The calculator returns the expected whelping date range and current week of pregnancy.
  3. Review the weekly milestone checklist for vet appointments, dietary changes, and whelping preparation.
  4. Use the temperature monitoring guide from day 58 to predict the 24-hour whelping window.

Canine pregnancy timeline and care milestones

Canine gestation is divided into three stages. The embryonic stage (weeks 1–4) involves fertilisation, implantation, and early organ formation. The fetal stage (weeks 5–7) involves rapid growth and differentiation. The late stage (weeks 8–9) involves final growth and preparation for birth. Progesterone testing around day 28–35 can confirm pregnancy via ultrasound; an X-ray at day 55+ can count the number of puppies. The dam's calorie needs increase gradually from week 6, reaching 1.5–2× maintenance by whelping week.

Whelping box preparation and signs of imminent birth

A whelping box should be introduced to the dam at least 2 weeks before the expected delivery date so she can become familiar and comfortable with it. The box should be large enough for her to lie stretched out, with low sides she can step over but puppies cannot. Line it with washable bedding or disposable puppy pads. The most reliable sign of imminent whelping is a rectal temperature drop below 99°F (37.2°C) — measure twice daily from day 58 onwards. Active labour contractions that last more than 4 hours without a puppy being born require emergency veterinary attention.
