Essential supplies by pet type

Every new pet requires a core set of supplies before they arrive home. For dogs: food and water bowls, collar and ID tag, leash, crate or bed, food, treats, waste bags, and grooming basics. For cats: litter box (one per cat plus one extra), litter, food/water bowls, scratching post, carrier, and toys. The single most important investment for any new pet owner is a relationship with a veterinarian — schedule a new pet exam within the first week of adoption.

Pet-proofing your home before bringing a pet home

Before a new pet arrives, inspect your home for hazards. For dogs and cats: secure loose electrical cords, remove toxic houseplants (lilies are fatal to cats; azalea, sago palm, and xylitol-containing products are dangerous to dogs), lock away cleaning products and medications, and ensure trash cans have secure lids. For rabbits and rodents: all chewing-accessible wires must be covered and escape routes blocked. For birds: cooking with non-stick pans (PTFE/Teflon) releases fumes toxic to birds; ensure adequate cage placement away from kitchens and drafts.

Activities, toys, and environmental features that provide mental and physical stimulation to meet a pet's behavioural needs.

PTFE toxicity (birds)
Polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) coating on non-stick cookware releases fumes when overheated that are acutely toxic to birds.
Toxic plants (pets)
Common houseplants such as lilies (cats), sago palm (dogs/cats), and azaleas that can cause severe illness or death if ingested.
