How to use Pet Water Intake Calculator

Calculate your pet's daily water requirements based on weight and species. Adequate hydration is critical for kidney function, joint lubrication, temperature regulation, and nutrient transport. This calculator helps you identify the target water intake for your dog or cat and recognise signs of dehydration early.

  1. Select your pet's species (dog or cat).
  2. Enter your pet's weight in pounds or kilograms.
  3. Note whether your pet eats primarily wet food (high moisture) or dry kibble (low moisture).
  4. The result shows total daily water requirement and how much drinking water to offer beyond food moisture.

Daily water requirements by pet species and weight

Pets require approximately 1 ml of water per kcal of food consumed, or roughly 50–60 ml per kg of body weight per day. Wet food (75–82% moisture) provides a significant portion of daily water needs — a cat eating wet food exclusively may drink very little additional water, which is normal and healthy. Pets fed exclusively dry kibble must drink significantly more. Environmental temperature, exercise level, pregnancy, and lactation all increase water requirements.

Signs of dehydration and how to encourage water intake

The skin tent test is the most practical at-home dehydration check: gently pinch the skin on the back of your pet's neck — in a well-hydrated pet, it snaps back immediately; in a dehydrated pet, it holds a tent shape. Other signs include dry or tacky gums, sunken eyes, and reduced urine output. To encourage drinking: use a pet water fountain (running water appeals to cats especially), place multiple water bowls in different locations, keep bowls clean (wash daily), and consider adding a small amount of low-sodium broth to water for reluctant drinkers.

Glossary

Dehydration in pets
A condition where fluid loss exceeds intake — signs include skin tent test (skin does not snap back), dry gums, sunken eyes, and lethargy.
Moisture content (pet food)
The percentage of water in a pet food; wet food typically 75–82%, dry kibble 8–12%.
Skin tent test
A quick dehydration check: pinch skin at the scruff; normal skin snaps back immediately; dehydrated skin holds a fold ("tent") for 1+ seconds.
Polydipsia
Excessive drinking in pets — a clinical sign of diabetes, kidney disease, or Cushing's disease that warrants veterinary evaluation.
