How to use Pokédex Lookup

This free online Pokédex lets you look up any Pokémon by name or National Dex number and instantly see its official artwork, elemental types, height and weight, abilities, and complete set of base stats. Fans, competitive players, and quiz-makers use it to compare creatures, plan team match-ups, and settle "who is stronger" debates without digging through wikis or installing an app. Every result is fetched live from the open-source PokéAPI, the same community dataset that powers countless Pokémon tools and apps.

  1. Type a Pokémon name (like charizard) or its National Dex number (like 6) into the search box.
  2. Press Look Up (or hit Enter) to fetch the entry from the PokéAPI.
  3. View the official artwork along with the Pokémon’s ID, types, height, and weight.
  4. Scan the abilities list to see what passive effects the Pokémon can have.
  5. Read the base stats bars (HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, Speed) to judge its strengths.

Understanding Pokémon base stats

Every Pokémon has six base stats that define its baseline capabilities before any training, nature, or items are applied. HP determines how much damage it can take, Attack and Special Attack scale physical and special move damage, Defense and Special Defense reduce incoming physical and special damage, and Speed decides who moves first each turn. Base stats range from 1 to 255, and their total (the "base stat total") is a quick shorthand for how powerful a Pokémon is overall. Two Pokémon can share a similar total yet feel completely different in battle: a glass cannon piles points into Attack and Speed while leaving its defenses thin, whereas a wall invests in HP and both defensive stats. Reading the bars in this Pokédex helps you spot those profiles instantly.

Types, abilities, and where the data comes from

A Pokémon’s one or two types determine which attacks are super-effective, not very effective, or have no effect against it — the type chart is the backbone of battle strategy. Abilities are passive traits that trigger automatically, such as boosting a stat, absorbing certain moves, or inflicting status on contact. This tool reads everything live from PokéAPI, a free, community-maintained REST API that exposes the data from the main-series games under an open license. Because the data is static reference material, results are cached for a week to keep things fast and to be a good citizen of the free API. If a name does not resolve, try the National Dex number, or use the specific form name (for example, "giratina-altered") since alternate forms are stored as separate entries.
