How to use Number to Words Converter
The number to words converter spells out any integer or decimal as English words, and optionally formats it as a currency amount for cheques and legal documents. Enter a number such as 1,234.56 and get "one thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six" in standard mode, or "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and 56/100" in currency mode. The tool handles negative numbers, decimals, and values up to the billions, entirely in your browser without any upload.
- Choose Standard mode for generic number-to-words conversion, or Currency mode for cheques and invoices.
- Type the number in the input box (use digits, optional decimal point, optional leading minus for negatives).
- Press Convert or press Enter to see the result.
- Click Copy to copy the result to your clipboard for pasting into documents.

When you need numbers written in words
Legal and financial documents require written-out numbers to prevent ambiguity and fraud. A cheque for "$1,234" can be altered to "$91,234" by adding a digit; "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars" cannot. Contracts, deeds, and wills often state monetary amounts twice — numerically and in words — for the same reason. Academic and creative writing may spell out numbers for style consistency (AP style: spell out numbers under 10; Chicago: spell out numbers under 100). Number words are also useful for learning English, for text-to-speech scripts, and for formatting reports where numerals look out of place.
| Input | Currency output |
|---|---|
| 0 | zero dollars and 00/100 |
| 1 | one dollar and 00/100 |
| 100.50 | one hundred dollars and 50/100 |
| 1234.99 | one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and 99/100 |
| 1000000 | one million dollars and 00/100 |
How English number words are constructed
English number words follow a hierarchical pattern based on groups of three digits (thousands). Ones 1–19 have unique words. Tens 20–90 combine a tens word (twenty, thirty…) with a hyphenated ones word if non-zero (twenty-three). Hundreds add "X hundred" before the tens. Thousands, millions, billions, and trillions prefix their group word after the chunk. For example, 123,456,789 is parsed as 123 million, 456 thousand, 789, producing "one hundred twenty-three million, four hundred fifty-six thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine".
