Simplifying fractions
A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than one. To get there you divide both by their greatest common divisor. For 6/8 the greatest common divisor is 2, so both halve to give 3/4 — the same value written as simply as possible. This matters because equivalent fractions look different but mean the same thing: 6/8, 3/4, and 75/100 are all 0.75. Reducing makes fractions easier to compare and to work with, and it is the final step most teachers expect. The converter reduces automatically and also normalises the sign, so a negative denominator moves the minus sign to the front where it belongs.

Terminating and repeating decimals
Not every fraction becomes a neat decimal. A fraction terminates only when its simplified denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5 — the factors of ten. So 3/4 gives exactly 0.75, but 1/3 gives 0.333… repeating forever. Going the other way, this converter reconstructs the exact fraction from a terminating decimal, since a finite number of decimal places maps cleanly onto a power of ten. A repeating decimal cannot be recovered exactly from its truncated form: typing 0.333 yields 333/1000, not 1/3, because those are genuinely different numbers. When you need an exact repeating fraction, enter it as a fraction rather than as a rounded decimal.
