How to use Percentage Change Calculator

The percentage change calculator tells you how much a value has risen or fallen in relative terms. Enter the original number and the new number, and it returns the percentage increase or decrease along with the absolute change. It uses the standard (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100 formula, so a jump from 120 to 150 shows as a 25% increase. Increase versus decrease

The sign of the result tells you the direction. When the new value is larger than the original, the change is positive — an increase. When it is smaller, the change is negative — a decrease. The size of the number tells you how big the move is relative to where you started, which is why the same absolute change can be a large or small percentage depending on the baseline. A $10 rise on a $20 item is a 50% increase, while the same $10 rise on a $200 item is only 5%. Expressing change as a percentage makes comparisons fair across items of very different sizes.

Percentage change versus percentage points

These two are often confused, and mixing them up can be misleading. Suppose an interest rate goes from 20% to 25%. The percentage-point change is simply 25 − 20 = 5 points. The percentage change, however, is measured relative to the starting rate: 5 ÷ 20 × 100 = 25%. Both statements are true but describe different things. News and marketing sometimes use the larger-sounding figure without saying which one it is. This calculator gives you the relative percentage change; if you need percentage points, just subtract the two percentages directly.
