Engagement rate formulas explained

The most common engagement rate formula is ER by followers: (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100. This is widely used for influencer marketing benchmarks. ER by reach: (Total Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100 measures how engaging your content is for people who actually saw it — more accurate for organic performance measurement. ER by impressions: (Total Engagements ÷ Impressions) × 100 accounts for repeat views. For influencer comparison, always use the same formula — mixing ER by followers with ER by reach produces misleading comparisons.

TikTok4–18%2–8%Engagements ÷ Views
LinkedIn2–5%1–2%Engagements ÷ Impressions
Twitter/X0.5–2%0.1–0.5%Engagements ÷ Impressions
YouTube2–5%1–2%Engagements ÷ Views

Why engagement rate matters for monetization

Brands pay premium rates for high-engagement accounts because engagement signals an active, trusting audience. A micro-influencer (10K–50K followers) with 6% engagement is more valuable to most brands than a macro-influencer (500K+ followers) with 0.8% engagement — the micro-influencer's audience is more likely to act on recommendations. For AdSense and affiliate revenue, engagement correlates with dwell time and click-through rates. Platforms also use engagement rate as a ranking signal — higher engagement posts get wider organic reach in feeds and recommendations.
