Platform character limits reference
Each social platform enforces its own character limits. Twitter/X posts are capped at 280 characters; URLs count as 23 characters regardless of actual length (t.co shortening). LinkedIn posts allow up to 3,000 characters. Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 are shown before "more". TikTok captions are limited to 2,200 characters; bios to 80. YouTube descriptions have a 5,000-character limit. Facebook posts technically allow 63,206 characters but the algorithm suppresses long posts. Pinterest descriptions: 500 characters. Knowing these limits prevents truncation surprises.

Hashtag and emoji counts
Hashtags count toward Twitter/X character limits as normal text — a 10-character hashtag uses 10 characters. Most emoji count as 2 characters on Twitter/X due to Unicode encoding (emoji are typically encoded as 2 UTF-16 code units). This means a 5-emoji tweet uses 10 characters just for the emoji. On Instagram, each hashtag counts toward the 2,200-character caption limit, and Instagram recommends 3–5 targeted hashtags over 30 generic ones for discovery. LinkedIn posts with 3–5 hashtags get higher reach according to LinkedIn's algorithm documentation.
