How to use UK Postcode Lookup
This UK postcode lookup resolves any British postcode to its administrative geography and exact map coordinates in a single query. Enter a postcode such as SW1A 1AA and you instantly see the country, region, local authority district, county, electoral ward, parish, and the latitude and longitude of the postcode centroid. It draws on Postcodes.io, an open API built directly on Office for National Statistics and Ordnance Survey open data, so the answers match official UK government datasets without any sign-up, key, or cost.
- Type the UK postcode you want to look up into the search box (spacing is optional).
- Press Look up (or hit Enter) to query the Postcodes.io API.
- Read the resolved country, region, administrative district, county, ward and parish.
- Note the latitude and longitude centroid if you need map coordinates.
- Try another postcode, or copy the coordinates into your mapping tool.
Your query is sent to Postcodes.ioto fetch results. We don't store it.
Anatomy of a UK postcode
A UK postcode is split into two halves separated by a space. The outward code (e.g. SW1A) identifies the postal area and district and is used to route mail to the correct sorting office. The inward code (e.g. 1AA) narrows delivery down to a group of roughly fifteen addresses. The first one or two letters are the postal area (SW = South West London), followed by a district number, then the sector digit and two final letters. Because the format is standardised, a lookup can map any valid postcode to a rich set of administrative boundaries and a precise grid reference.
| Component | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Postal area | SW | Group of districts (South West London) |
| District | SW1A | Outward code routing to a sorting office |
| Sector | SW1A 1 | A neighbourhood within the district |
| Unit | SW1A 1AA | A small group of nearby addresses |
What the administrative fields mean
Each postcode is mapped to several layers of UK administrative geography. The country is one of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The region is a former Government Office Region (only meaningful in England). The administrative district is the local council responsible for services like bins and planning, while the county is the upper-tier authority where two-tier local government still exists. The electoral ward is the smallest unit used for council elections, and the parish (where one exists) is the most local tier of government. The coordinates are the centroid of the postcode unit, so they sit roughly in the middle of its addresses rather than on a specific door.
