The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is one of the simplest and most reliable ways to screen for unhealthy central body fat. You divide your waist circumference by your height — using the same unit for both — and compare the result against a small set of bands. The guiding rule is memorable: keep your waist to less than half your height. How to read your ratio

The waist-to-height ratio is interpreted with a handful of clear thresholds that apply to most adults regardless of height, which is part of its appeal. A ratio below 0.4 can indicate that you are underweight for your frame. The healthy zone runs from 0.4 up to just under 0.5 — staying below 0.5 means your waist is less than half your height, the level associated with the lowest risk. From 0.5 to just under 0.6 indicates increased central fat and is a useful prompt to look at diet and activity. At 0.6 and above, the ratio signals a high level of abdominal fat and elevated cardiometabolic risk. Because the same boundaries work for tall and short people alike, you do not need height-specific charts the way BMI categories sometimes imply.

WHtR versus BMI

Body Mass Index is widely used but has a known blind spot: it considers only weight and height, so it cannot tell muscle from fat or say where fat is stored. Two people with the same BMI can have very different health profiles depending on whether their fat sits around the hips or the abdomen. Waist-to-height ratio targets exactly that gap by measuring central fat, which sits around the organs and is more strongly tied to cardiovascular and metabolic disease. That makes WHtR a valuable companion to BMI rather than a replacement — using both gives a fuller picture. For the most accurate waist measurement, measure directly against the skin at the level of the navel, after breathing out normally, without pulling the tape tight. Consistent technique matters more than the exact landmark when you are tracking change over time.
