What counts as a public holiday?
A public holiday (also called a national, statutory or bank holiday) is a day designated by law on which most businesses, banks, schools and government offices close and many employees are entitled to paid time off. Some holidays are fixed to a calendar date — like New Year’s Day on 1 January — while others move each year because they follow the day of the week (the first Monday of a month) or a lunar or ecclesiastical calendar, as Easter does. Countries also differ between national holidays observed everywhere and regional holidays observed only in certain states or provinces. This tool lists official national public holidays; always confirm with a local authority for region-specific days.

Why holiday dates change and differ between countries
No two national calendars are identical, and even within one country the dates can shift from year to year. Moveable holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving and many Islamic and Hindu observances fall on different calendar dates annually. Governments also add, remove or relocate holidays by decree — declaring a one-off day of mourning, celebration, or a “bridge” day that links a holiday to the weekend. When a fixed holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday, many countries grant a substitute day off on the nearest weekday. Because of this, always look up the specific year you need rather than assuming last year’s dates still apply, and treat the results as a planning guide that can be overridden by official announcements.
