How to use Mulch Calculator

The mulch calculator estimates cubic yards and bags of mulch for garden beds, borders and landscapes. Enter the area dimensions and desired depth to find the quantity needed, with coverage estimates for standard 2 cu ft bags.

  1. Enter length and width (or area in sq ft) of the area.
  2. Set the mulch depth (2–4 inches recommended).
  3. Review cubic yards and number of standard 2 cu ft bags.
  4. Add an optional price to get total material cost.

Mulch depth recommendations

The ideal mulch depth balances weed suppression with avoiding moisture problems. Shredded hardwood at 3 inches provides good weed suppression while allowing water penetration. Inorganic mulch (gravel, rubber) can go deeper without rotting but doesn't add organic matter. Too deep (>4") can prevent oxygen from reaching roots and create a habitat for pests.

Mulch types comparison

Shredded hardwood and bark mulch decompose over 1–2 years, adding organic matter and improving soil. Pine straw is lightweight, acidic (good for acid-loving plants) and slow to decompose. Cedar and cypress mulch repel insects and last longer. Rubber mulch (recycled tyres) lasts 10+ years with no decomposition but adds no soil benefit. Gravel is permanent and low-maintenance.
