Deck Board / Lumber Calculator
Plan your deck build with confidence. Enter deck size, board dimensions, and spacing to get exact board count, total lineal feet, and estimated material cost.
How to use Deck Board / Lumber Calculator
The deck board calculator estimates the number of decking boards, lineal feet of lumber, joist count and fasteners needed for any deck size. Enter deck dimensions, board size, spacing and optional picture frame border to get a full materials list with waste factor included.
- Enter deck length and width.
- Enter board width (actual, not nominal) and desired gap between boards.
- Choose board direction (parallel to length or width).
- Optionally add a picture frame border row.
- Review board count, lineal feet, joist count and hardware.

Nominal vs actual lumber dimensions
A "2×6" deck board is nominally 2" × 6" but actually 1.5" × 5.5". A "5/4 × 6" composite board is actually 1" × 5.5". Always use actual dimensions for calculations. For 5.5" boards with 1/4" gap, the on-center spacing is 5.75". Board count for a 12-ft-wide deck = 144" ÷ 5.75" = 25 boards. Add 10% for waste and end cuts.
| Nominal size | Actual width | Actual thickness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5/4 × 6 (composite) | 5.5" | 1.0" | Most common composite |
| 2 × 6 (wood) | 5.5" | 1.5" | Pressure-treated standard |
| 2 × 4 (wood) | 3.5" | 1.5" | Used for tight-spaced decks |
| 1 × 6 (cedar) | 5.5" | 0.75" | Lightweight; needs close joist spacing |
Joist sizing and spacing
Joist sizing and spacing depend on span and local building code. Common residential: 2×8 joists at 16" on centre for spans up to 12 ft; 2×10 at 16" OC for 12–14 ft; 2×12 for longer spans. 12" OC spacing provides a stiffer feel under foot. Composite decking manufacturers often require 12" OC to prevent bounce. Always check the composite manufacturer's installation requirements.
Glossary
- On-centre (OC)
- The distance measured from the centre of one joist to the centre of the next.
- Joist hanger
- A metal connector that supports a joist at beam intersections without toenailing.
- Fascia board
- The finishing board around the perimeter of a deck, hiding the framing structure.
- Pressure-treated
- Lumber infused with preservatives to resist rot and insect damage; required for ground contact.
