How to use Drywall / Sheetrock Calculator

The drywall calculator estimates how many 4×8 or 4×12 sheets are needed for walls and ceilings, along with joint tape, mud and screw quantities. Enter room dimensions, subtract door and window openings, and add a waste factor — the result tells you exactly what to put on your materials list.

  1. Enter room dimensions: length, width and ceiling height.
  2. Add number of standard doors (2.67 × 6.67 ft) and windows.
  3. Choose sheet size: 4×8 (32 sq ft) or 4×12 (48 sq ft).
  4. Set a waste factor (10% recommended).
  5. Review sheet count, screws, tape and compound needed.

Drywall thickness guide

Standard interior walls use 1/2" drywall. Ceilings benefit from 5/8" type X for its sag resistance. Bathrooms and wet areas use moisture-resistant (green board) or cement board. 1/4" drywall curves over arches and rounded surfaces. Fire-rated assemblies (garages, stairwells) require 5/8" type X on specific framing.

Hanging and finishing sequence

Hang ceilings first, then walls — ceiling sheets butt against studs/joists with no gap; wall sheets are lifted snug to the ceiling. Apply joint compound (mud) in three coats: tape coat (beds the tape), second coat (feather wide), finish coat (sand smooth). Allow 24 hours drying per coat. Final finish is sanded to 220 grit before priming.

Glossary

Type X
Fire-rated drywall with glass fibres that slow burn-through; required in fire-rated assemblies.
Joint compound
The plaster-like material (mud) used to fill and feather drywall seams.
Feathering
Widening and thinning the compound coat to blend invisibly with the surface.
Butt joint
The non-tapered ends of drywall sheets meeting; harder to finish than tapered edges.
