Drywall / Sheetrock Calculator
Estimate drywall materials precisely. Enter room dimensions and subtract doors/windows to get 4×8 or 4×12 sheet count, screws, joint tape, and compound needed.
How to use Drywall / Sheetrock Calculator
The drywall calculator estimates how many 4×8 or 4×12 sheets are needed for walls and ceilings, along with joint tape, mud and screw quantities. Enter room dimensions, subtract door and window openings, and add a waste factor — the result tells you exactly what to put on your materials list.
- Enter room dimensions: length, width and ceiling height.
- Add number of standard doors (2.67 × 6.67 ft) and windows.
- Choose sheet size: 4×8 (32 sq ft) or 4×12 (48 sq ft).
- Set a waste factor (10% recommended).
- Review sheet count, screws, tape and compound needed.

Drywall thickness guide
Standard interior walls use 1/2" drywall. Ceilings benefit from 5/8" type X for its sag resistance. Bathrooms and wet areas use moisture-resistant (green board) or cement board. 1/4" drywall curves over arches and rounded surfaces. Fire-rated assemblies (garages, stairwells) require 5/8" type X on specific framing.
| Type | Thickness | Application | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 1/2" | Interior walls | Most common residential use |
| Standard | 5/8" | Ceilings | Sag-resistant; also fire-rated |
| Type X | 5/8" | Garages, stairwells | Fire-rated; required by code |
| Moisture-resistant | 1/2" | Bathrooms (non-shower) | Green board |
| Cement board | 1/2" | Shower surrounds, tile | Water-proof; not drywall |
| Flexible | 1/4" | Curved walls, arches | Bends to shape wet |
Hanging and finishing sequence
Hang ceilings first, then walls — ceiling sheets butt against studs/joists with no gap; wall sheets are lifted snug to the ceiling. Apply joint compound (mud) in three coats: tape coat (beds the tape), second coat (feather wide), finish coat (sand smooth). Allow 24 hours drying per coat. Final finish is sanded to 220 grit before priming.
Glossary
- Type X
- Fire-rated drywall with glass fibres that slow burn-through; required in fire-rated assemblies.
- Joint compound
- The plaster-like material (mud) used to fill and feather drywall seams.
- Feathering
- Widening and thinning the compound coat to blend invisibly with the surface.
- Butt joint
- The non-tapered ends of drywall sheets meeting; harder to finish than tapered edges.
