All processing happens in your browser — your files are never uploaded.
How to use Video to GIF Converter
The Video to GIF converter turns a short segment of any MP4, WebM or MOV video into an animated GIF — fully in-browser with no uploads required. Animated GIFs are universally supported in chat apps, email clients and social platforms, making this tool perfect for creating reaction clips, product demos, tutorial snippets and visual documentation.
- Click "Select Video" and open an MP4, WebM or MOV file.
- Set the start time and end time to select the clip you want to convert (keep it under 10 seconds for a manageable GIF size).
- Choose the output width and frames-per-second rate (15 fps is a good balance of smoothness and file size).
- Select a colour palette size — 256 colours produces the best quality GIF.
- Click Convert, then download the animated GIF when it is ready.
Your data never leaves your device — 100% private processing.
Optimising GIF file size
Animated GIFs can become very large because the format uses lossless LZW compression and stores a full palette per frame. To keep file sizes manageable: limit clip length to 5–10 seconds, reduce the output width (320–480 px is often sufficient), lower the frame rate to 10–15 fps, and reduce the colour palette to 64 or 128 colours for clips that are not highly colourful. Using a dithering algorithm such as Floyd-Steinberg can make palette reduction look smoother.
| Setting | Lower value effect | Higher value effect |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate (fps) | Smaller file, choppier | Larger file, smoother |
| Width (px) | Smaller file, lower detail | Larger file, more detail |
| Palette size | Smaller file, colour banding | Larger file, accurate colour |
GIF vs WebP and AVIF for animations
Animated GIF is the most compatible format but the least efficient. If your target platform supports it, animated WebP offers the same animation capability at roughly 30–40% smaller file sizes, and animated AVIF can be even smaller. However, GIF remains the safest choice for embedding in email, Markdown files and legacy CMS platforms where modern animated image formats are not supported.
Glossary
- GIF
- Graphics Interchange Format; a lossless image format supporting up to 256 colours per frame and basic frame animation.
- LZW compression
- Lempel–Ziv–Welch, the lossless compression algorithm used by the GIF format to reduce file size.
- Frame rate (fps)
- The number of image frames displayed per second; higher values produce smoother motion at the cost of larger file size.
- Colour palette
- The set of colours available in a GIF frame; GIF supports up to 256 unique colours per frame.
- Dithering
- A technique that simulates additional colours by mixing available palette colours in adjacent pixels, reducing visible banding.
