The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

The most widely recommended formula for estimating BMR is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990 and generally regarded as more accurate for modern populations than older formulas. It uses weight in kilograms (W), height in centimeters (H), and age in years (A). For men: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5. For women: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161. The only difference between the two is the final constant, which reflects average differences in body composition. Like all equations, it produces an estimate for an average person of your size — individual metabolism varies, and factors such as muscle mass, genetics, and health conditions can shift the real number. A Worked Example

Take a 30-year-old man weighing 80 kg and standing 180 cm tall. 1. 10 × 80 = 800. 2. 6.25 × 180 = 1,125. 3. 5 × 30 = 150. 4. Combine: 800 + 1,125 − 150 + 5 = 1,780 calories. His estimated BMR is about 1,780 calories per day. Now a 30-year-old woman weighing 65 kg at 165 cm: 10 × 65 = 650; 6.25 × 165 = 1,031.25; 5 × 30 = 150; so 650 + 1,031.25 − 150 − 161 = 1,370.25, or about 1,370 calories. Activity Multipliers and TDEE

To convert BMR into TDEE, multiply by a factor that reflects how active you are. The commonly used multipliers are: sedentary (little or no exercise) 1.2; lightly active (1–3 days a week) about 1.375; moderately active (3–5 days) about 1.55; very active (6–7 days) about 1.725; and extremely active (hard daily training or a physical job) up to 1.9. Returning to our example man with a BMR of 1,780: if he is moderately active, his TDEE is roughly 1,780 × 1.55 ≈ 2,759 calories per day. The sedentary woman with a BMR of 1,370 would have a TDEE near 1,370 × 1.2 ≈ 1,644 calories.
