How to use Towing / Payload Calculator

The towing calculator checks whether your vehicle can safely tow a trailer or load by comparing the trailer weight and tongue weight against your vehicle's published towing capacity, payload rating and GCWR. It warns when any limit is exceeded and shows which constraint is the binding one, preventing dangerous overloading.

  1. Enter your vehicle's towing capacity, payload and GVWR from the door jamb sticker or owner's manual.
  2. Enter the trailer gross weight (loaded) and tongue weight (10–15% of trailer weight).
  3. Add passengers and cargo weight in the vehicle.
  4. Review pass/fail for each limit and the safety margins.

Towing capacity, payload and GCWR explained

Towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight the hitch can pull. Payload is the maximum load inside or on the vehicle (passengers + cargo). GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) is the max total of vehicle + trailer. All three limits must be respected simultaneously — a truck may have a 10,000-lb tow rating but an 1,800-lb payload; loading the bed heavily can make it unsafe to tow even a modest trailer.

Weight distribution hitches and sway control

For trailers exceeding 50% of the tow vehicle's weight, a weight-distribution hitch is recommended to level the vehicle and improve steering. Sway control is critical for trailers over about 5,000 lbs or in crosswind/high-speed conditions. Brake controllers are legally required in most states when the loaded trailer exceeds 3,000 lbs.

Glossary

GVWR
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating — maximum total weight of the loaded vehicle including occupants.
GCWR

Tongue weight
The downward force a trailer exerts on the hitch ball; should be 10–15% of trailer weight.
Payload
The maximum cargo and passenger weight the vehicle can carry (GVWR − curb weight).
