Color model differences
RGB is the native web color model; each component ranges 0–255. HEX is a compact RGB representation using base-16 notation — #FF0000 is full red (R=255, G=0, B=0). HSL separates color into human-intuitive dimensions: hue (0–360°, the color wheel), saturation (0–100%, grey to pure color) and lightness (0–100%, black to white). HSV is similar but uses Value instead of Lightness; it is more common in photo editing software.
When to use which format
Use HEX in HTML and CSS strings. Use RGB when compositing layers or when you need arithmetic color manipulation. Use HSL when you want to programmatically lighten, darken or shift the hue of a color — CSS custom properties with HSL make theme generation straightforward. Use HSV in design applications like Photoshop or Figma. All formats represent the same sRGB gamut — it is purely a notation preference.
